LA BUCA DEL
BEATO
Along the Tresa stream
just below the hills of Terre di Nano, the Buca del
Beato (?The Hole of the Blessed?) is situated between
craggy rock walls and hidden by a thicket of oaks. The
deep and dark natural caves formed out of the limestone
cliffs were home to a blessed man named Giovanni
Benincasa for nearly 20 years in the 1400s, and this
hermit was venerated for centuries by the local people.
The surrounding area is
extremely evocative: the deep ravine of the torrent, the
cascades and the small natural lakes in the surrounding
forest frame the mysterious Buca or ?Hole? which can be
reached only on foot, making it make an ambitious goal
for lovers of the walks in the open air and woods.
La
tradizione popolare individua il giaciglio del Beato
all'interno delle grotte (Letto del Beato) e attribuisce
a lui l'apparizione delle "Orme del Diavolo", impronte
di quadrupede rimaste impresse nelle rocce soprastanti
la grotta quando il Beato, per sfuggire al Diavolo,
spiccò con la sua cavalcatura un enorme salto,
attraversando la gola. Il luogo è ancora visitabile e
pressoché intatto; la cascata, il bosco e le suggestive
grotte ne fanno un'ambita meta per gli amanti delle
passeggiate all'aperto.
